15 facts about Big Day Music

Big Day Music is the parent company for the Jiggers ceilidh band.

Here are 15 interesting facts about Big Day Music:

1. We're a music agency providing pro musicians* and bands for weddings and events.

2. Most people hire us for background music: either traditional Scottish, jazz or classical music.

3. We also hire out DJs, covers bands, and offer "wet hire"** sound systems and lighting.

4. We're a limited company, which means my official title is Company Director. Cool, eh?

5. We're VAT registered. That means 15% of our fee helps to feed some of Britain's poorest politicians.

6. We're different from other agencies in that our roster is much smaller, but guaranteed to be excellent quality. It's better to have choice of a few good options than a hundred potential lemons.

7. We don't provide magicians, karaoke***, lookalikeys, tribute bands or other stuff we think is lame.

Visit_website_bigday8. They're not all lame. If you do that kind of thing, go for it. We're just about good live music.

9. We're accredited members of the Federation of Small Businesses**** and also of the Musicians' Union.

10. Jake Bingham is the guy who quotes you happy and organises events. Email him with your questions.

11. We bank with the Co-op. They promise never to use your money to overthrow the government.

12. The business currently has three employees: me, Jake and Zara. Zara is our marketing guru.

13. The piper in the picture is "Bonny Donny" who plays with the Jiggers and sometimes wears a claymore to impress the ladies.

14. I can't think of other interesting stuff. It's not right to end a list at 14 though, is it?

15. Just check out our website if you're interested. I made it with help from Gill at Sibrod.com. Do you like it?

*They play brilliantly, they dress and act appropriately, and are completely reliable. If they don't, we don't hire them.

**Wet hire means we bring it to you, set it up and take it away again. You don't have to transport it.

***Karaoke is great fun, I admit.

What I’ll be blogging about. And why you might want to read…

Gdb1

So it's called Jigblog. That's because I lead a Scottish ceilidh band called The Jiggers. I'm doing it as a replacement to the mildy infamous Jiggers/Bigdaymusic newsletter.

The blog will be:

  • Stuff directly relating to ceilidhs, of interest to fans, customers, and people planning ceilidhs.
  • About music. It's probably the subject I enjoy talking about most.
  • About Scotland. It's where I live, mostly.
  • About business. I love running my own business, dreaming dreams, working hard and having no cash.
  • About fun stuff that I like, or cool stuff you might not have come across.

It won't be:

a) long and tedious. I hope.

b) a diary of my life, because most people couldn't care less about what my cat is doing right now. Hell, I don't even have a cat.

c) a philosophy or theology blog. People who know me know that I love talking about that stuff too. But in the interests of point "a" I'll keep it light here.

So is that a broad enough remit?

Anyone with me?

About

Jigblog is the blog of Greg de Blieck.

I’m a musician and entrepreneur. I’ve been running music-related businesses since I started the Jiggers Ceilidh Band in my final year at school in 1997.

I have set up two companies that reflect my various musical interests. Big Day Music ltd is a music agency that hires out musicians and bands (like the Jiggers), and Beatcave is a music production service offering remixing and programming for commercial music.

I am also a professional songwriter and am the credited writer of such hits as __________ (information pending)
